For some countries it is very clear what to expect food wise, for others not so much. Before going to Aruba we had no idea what to expect. Well, we couldn’t have been more surprised. We enjoyed every meal. There is a broad variety in the restaurants as well in the price range. The below list were our favorites.
Flying Fishbone was absolutely my favorite. Very romantic setting, delicious food and friendly staff. Well the whole island exists of friendly people. However, the reason I fell in love is the whole atmosphere. You can literally enjoy your meal in the water. A little disclaimer, after sunset the water can be a bit cold. No worries, there are spots in the sand so you can still enjoy the cool setting.
For a relaxing atmosphere and very good food Bohemian is the place to be. The whole vibe was fantastic. Very chill, relaxed and layback. There is some background music with a normal “volume” instead of decibel 100 like at the rest of the so called strip. And then the food. Wow it was very good. I had the catch of the day – red snapper – and it was delicious. Even my boyfriend a real meat eater, was jealous on my catch. His steak was also very good. The desserts are too die for.
Go to Huchada for local pastries. You know it is good when locals just keep showing up. Do I need to say more? We had some pastries for breakfast as well for lunch. All just yummmm! And in comparison with the rest of the island very cheap. We also had a good talk with one of the ladies working there. Just ask for recommendations and give it a try.
Another local stop. Zeerovers, the place where you get one basket of joy. Don’t miss this one. We had heart the stories, but the real experience was way better. It is unique and very local. It is good simple and cheap. The whole “everything in one basket” idea really works for me. So don’t expect anything fancy. Make sure you choose the baked banana (plantain), so gooood!
For breakfast we had two favorites. The first one was Eduardo’s Beach Shack. The best breakfast spot to enjoy your meal with your feet in the sand or water. Why? Because they do not have a bog sitting area and that is a good thing. The best place is to sit nearby the shore with your morning booster. Start with the banana pancakes (including fresh fruit and sorbet ice cream) and the Godzilla juice. Or try one of the other things on the menu. The next best place to have breakfast is Diana’s Pancake Place. We traveled for 11,5 hours and still decided to eat Dutch pancakes even though we can eat it all the time back home. Why? Because at Diana’s the pancakes are delicious. They are so good and the staff is very friendly. It felt like a cozy place. Good for breakfast and lunch.
For delicious cocktails you have enough options. Because we stayed at the Boardwalk Hotel – best hotel ever – you could find us often at the Ritz Carlton Beach Bar, sipping some cocktails. Hungry? The food is also very good over there.
The evening we arrived we went to Lola’s Taqueria. Very good taco’s and tortilla’s, low key restaurant. Very simple, fair price.
Being in the Caribbean means eating on the beach barefooted at barefoot. The whole atmosphere is so romantic and cozy. The service is good. The appetizers were delicious and the desserts were good.
If you are looking for a very cozy romantic place with live music the West Deck is the place to be. The other dishes were good. Staff is very friendly and the lights at night make it all very romantic. In case you find the Caribbean vibes too loud, you can sit “below” the Deck.
Last but not least, the foodtrucks. Aruba is the land of the foodtrucks, did you know? I didn’t. In any case the food is good and cheap. We found one on Eagle beach, wow. Very. Good. Just follow your nose and you will find it.
If you make it all up to the north of the island, enjoy the beach with a drink at Arashi beach shack.
There is only one place to stay in Aruba and that is Boardwalk Boutique Hotel. I don’t know where to start. Maybe by saying that this is a wonderful place to stay. Away from all the resorts a quiet oasis not for from the beach. This place gave us the real Caribbean feeling.
Every casita is so colorful and the owners thought about everything. It is so nicely laid out. It is a home away from home. The beds are quite big and we slept as a baby. There are two pools and most of the days we were almost by ourselves. The ladies at the reception were so wonderful and friendly, always ready to help us.
We had a lovely stay and can absolutely recommend it.
