January is not the best month to travel around in Europe. Or is it? Because my birthday is in January, I like to travel to a place with many sunny hours and a warm climate, a new place. Due to covid, the options were limited. Yet, at that time the best choice we could have made. North Italy it was. But organized by me it meant off the beaten path.
We flew from Amsterdam to Milan. Milan is the capital of fashion in Italy. A huge city, where you can spend a couple of days. In case big cities are not your thing, you can shorten your visit to two days. This way you only focus on the main touristic attractions. Milan has a subway. Feel free to use that, especially when time is of the essence. Otherwise, use those legs! We walked the whole city, all 4 days. By walking you get to see much more of a city. Want to learn more about what to do in Milan? In this post, you can read all about it.
After Milan make your way to Modena, the food capital of Italy. At least if you know your food! Eat your way around Modena. In case you have time, you can check out the region of Parmigiano or Parma. We loved the food tour in Modena. Exempt from food, there is also a lot of history to enjoy in Modena. Do not miss this stop during your road trip in North Italy. More about it in this post.
After all the fashion and food, it is time to lay back, and which city would be better than a town full of students? The city belongs to the young wild and free. But it also belongs to the old, wise, and grey. Bologna is a very vivid, city with history, but also where the future starts. Stroll around and find out. Bologna also has beautiful views, make your way to San Luca Basilica. Here is how you spend two days in the lay back student town.
Oh Bergamo, where have you been? If you need to choose between Milan or Bergamo, the latter one would be your pick. After Bologna it is only a couple of hours to Bergamo. Before flying back home or to your next destination. It is a city where you can take a step back and relax. We walked around and enjoyed the mountains, the city is surrounded by them. This is your bonus stop! We saved the best for last, do not make the same mistake as we did. Stay a couple of days in Bergamo, instead of just one day.
